If you have only ever stayed at hotels and resorts, a farm stay is a slightly different thing and it helps to know what to expect before you arrive. Not because it is difficult, but because the things that make it wonderful are different from what makes a five-star hotel wonderful, and coming in with the right expectations means you get the full benefit of being there.

Here is what we tell first-timers before they come to Amra Woods.

What to Pack

Keep it simple. You do not need much.

  • Comfortable clothes you do not mind getting wrinkled or slightly dirty. Lightweight cottons work best.
  • Closed shoes or sturdy sandals for walking around the farm. The ground is uneven in places and flip flops are not ideal outside the cottage.
  • A light jacket or shawl for the evenings, especially in winter when it cools down noticeably after sunset.
  • Sunscreen and a hat if you are planning to spend time outdoors during the day.
  • Any personal medication and toiletries you need. We have basics but we are not a pharmacy.
  • A good book or something offline to keep you company during the quieter parts of the day. This is not a complaint, it is a feature.

You do not need to pack formal clothes, multiple outfit changes, or anything you would bring to an urban hotel. The farm has its own dress code and it is extremely relaxed.

What to Expect

The cottages are properly comfortable. Good beds, clean bathrooms, air conditioning, the things you need to sleep well and feel looked after. Do not expect a hotel lobby or room service at 2am, but do expect to be comfortable and well fed throughout your stay.

The outdoors is a real farm. There are insects. There are sounds at night that you will not recognise for the first evening and then find oddly soothing by the second. The grounds are well maintained but they are not a manicured garden. Expect trees, paths, orchards, the pool, and a lot of open space.

Meals are cooked fresh for your group. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is good and the timing is flexible. You will not go hungry.

What to Let Go Of

This is the important part.

Let go of the urge to fill every hour. A farm stay works best when you allow it to have a pace, and that pace is slower than you are used to. The instinct to optimise the trip, to do things, to see things, to produce content from things, works against the actual point of being there. The best moments tend to happen when you are not trying to have them.

Let go of excellent mobile signal expectations. Karjat has connectivity but it is not Mumbai. Think of this as a feature rather than a problem.

Let go of the assumption that quiet equals boring. By day two, most guests have discovered that quiet is actually what they came for and did not know how to ask for directly.

One Last Thing

Arrive a little hungry. The first meal at Amra Woods tends to set the tone for the whole trip, and you want to do it justice.
